St George doctor a finalist to be named the nation’s best GP

Long-serving St George doctor Adam Coltzau is in the running to be named Australian GP of the Year after winning the state title.

Dr Adam Coltzau is a finalist to be named Australia’s best GP.

Dr Coltzau, who divides his time between duties at the St George Hospital and work at a local medical centre, said he was honoured by the accolade.

“I was shocked yet grateful to be named Queensland finalist in the 2017 Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) General Practitioner of the Year Award.”

“There are many great GPs throughout the state and I never really thought I was in that category.”

“I would like to thank my family, colleagues and the great people of St George for the support and opportunities they have provided me with.”

The annual RACGP General Practitioner of the Year Award recognizes GPs who have demonstrated exceptional commitment to improving the health and wellbeing of their community.

Dr Coltzau first came to St George in 1999 during his final year as a medical student and returned as a Junior Medical Officer a few years later.

“I absolutely love the place, there is something very special about this town and its people, so in 2002, I returned and have enjoyed helping to look after them ever since.”

The dedicated doctor is also a familiar face to many people in the nearby town of Bollon, where he provides a general practice outreach clinic.

Dr Coltzau is a senior lecturer at the University of Queensland, former president of the Rural Doctors Association of Queensland (RDAQ) and current Chair of the RDAQ Foundation.

The winner of the national RACGP General Practitioner of the Year Award will be announced at a conference to be held in Sydney in October.
