Longreach registrar attends World Rural Health Conference

15th June 2017

Dr Paul Adams, James Cook University (JCU) Registrar in Longreach attended the 2017 WONCA World Rural Health Conference in Cairns in May 2017.

Dr Adams grew up in Brisbane, and initially trained as a paramedic before deciding to become a doctor.

He said the major health issues in Longreach include obesity, alcoholism, mental health issues and cardiovascular disease.

“Within rural medicine, there is such variety. No two weeks are the same. No two days are the same.”

Dr Adams said there is a positive culture in rural medicine, and encourages young doctors to find mentors.

“Relationships are important. We have a big country to cover and there is plenty of space for everybody.”
