Cairns and rural areas of Queensland are set for an injection of new doctors as the latest round of budding General Practitioners (GPs) begins their training today.

Up to 50 registrars will attend a three-day introductory workshop for James Cook University’s GP training program, at the University’s Smithfield Campus.

They are part of a cohort of more than 120 doctors state-wide who are embarking on their studies at workshops in Cairns, Townsville, Hervey Bay, and the Sunshine Coast.

Nineteen registrars will remain in the Cairns and Hinterland region at various regional and remote clinics and hospitals.

JCU Director of GP training, Associate Professor Peta-Ann Teague said they will join more than 50 doctors currently training with JCU in the region.

“Over the past three years the program has produced 35 qualified GPs in the Cairns region alone, of which 25 have either stayed on or moved into the region to work.”

“Our doctors will practice across Queensland in regional, rural and remote communities to improve health outcomes where it is needed most”.

"We dedicate time and resources to matching applicants with training posts that will benefit their careers as well as the community. The training posts provide the opportunity to develop an extended scope of practice unique to rural and remote locations."

“JCU has a strong record of producing a skilled workforce for northern Australia and this new cohort of GPs will add to that legacy."

At the workshops, registrars will cover requirements of the Australian General Practice Training (AGPT) program. They will also meet their mentors and colleagues, as well as the support staff from JCU, and participate in simulated learning sessions.
